ONLINE SAFETY BILL
What do netizens think of the UK's measure to monitor virtual discourses? A Twitter analysis.
The United Kingdom’s flagship Online Safety Bill is a proposed set of laws that aims to safeguard the nation’s online community, especially juveniles. It makes social media companies obligatory to prioritise user safety.
Since its inception, the proposed act spurred controversy. Though NGOs who promote child safety welcomed the move, several rights groups feared curtailed free speech. In the concluding months of 2022, the bill initiated a fresh wave of discontent around the clause banning ‘legal but harmful’ content. Citizens stormed Twitter to express their opinions.
This analysis aims to identify the behavioural pattern of Twitter users who are behind the trending debate. This assignment was undertaken for the MA/ MSc Digital Journalism course at Goldsmiths, University of London and is currently available on the university server.
